Measurement Risk

Measurement risk is the probability that an incorrect decision will result from a measurement.  The consequences of not getting the measurement right can include; massive recalls, product failures, significant financial loss, and loss of life. Not all calibration labs are created equal.  There is quite a bit of difference between force measurement labs with CMC uncertainty parameters of 0.1 %, 0.05 %, 0.02 %, 0.01 %, 0.005 % and 0.002 % of applied force. Not using the right force calibration laboratory with the capability to meet your requirements is similar to using a ruler to calibrate a gauge block.  It just does not make sense.

As a primary force laboratory, Morehouse works with every customer to ensure the instruments submitted for force calibration, are calibrated in the same manner they are being used. This allows our customers to replicate the calibration results in their tests. As a primary force lab, our ISO/IEC 17025 accredited measurements are more accurate than any other commercial laboratory, and this often translates into much lower uncertainties for our customers.  Low uncertainties result in higher acceptance limits when using method 5 of ANSI/NCSLI Z540.3 Handbook and allow us to make more statements of conformity per the requirements of section of  ISO/IEC 17025:2017.

Morehouse primary force calibration laboratory is capable of performing ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration from 0.1 lbf to 2.25 million lbf.  Our force calibration lab features:


·       Force calibration with primary deadweight standards from 0.1 lbf to 120,000 lbf with Calibration and Measurement Capability (CMC) better than 0.002 % of applied force in compression and tension

·       Force calibration with secondary standards from 100,000 lbf to 2.25 million lbf (4.4 Kn to 10 MN) with Calibration and Measurement Capability (CMC) better than 0.01 % of applied force in compression

·       Force calibration with secondary standards from 100,000 lbf to 1.125 million lbf (4.4 Kn to 5 MN) with Calibration and Measurement Capability (CMC) better than 0.01 % of applied force in tension

Morehouse force calibration lab can calibrate a variety of force sensors such as load cells, multi-axis transducers, proving rings, force gauges, traction dynamometers, crane scales, bolt testers, aircraft scales, load cell washer, truck wheel load scales, miniature load cells, handheld force gauges, etc. We can provide special services such as shunt calibration check, load simulator calibration, repair broken connectors, and proof loading tests. The laboratory is also supported by an engineering team, production team, and advanced machine shop capable of designing and making any adapters or fixtures necessary to perform the calibration correctly.


Morehouse offers ISO/IEC 17025 accredited ASTM E74 and ISO 376 force calibrations. Many other force calibration facilities may be accredited, but do not offer ISO/IEC 17025 accredited ASTM E74 or ISO 376 force calibrations. Our force calibration facilities and procedures are documented in a controlled Quality Assurance program manual that provides for the requirements of the following:


·       ISO 17025 Accreditation by A2LA  certificate # 1398.01

·       ISO Guide 25 (ISO/IEC 17025) – General requirements for the competence of calibration and testing laboratories.

·       Accredited for calibration to ASTM E74 Class AA, ISO 376 Class 00, and make decreasing measurements to determine hysteresis errors

·       ANSI/NCSL Z540-3 – American National Standard for Calibration – Calibration Laboratories and Measuring and Test Equipment General Requirements.

·       Morehouse is audited by a large NUPIC team for the following:

·       10 CFR 50 APPENDIX B – Quality Assurance Criteria for Nuclear Power Plants and Fuel Reprocessing Plants.

·       10 CFR PART 21 – United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission – Reporting of Defects and Noncompliance.

Unless otherwise requested, proving rings and other instruments that are used to calibrate testing machines to ASTM E4 and load cells are calibrated in strict accordance with ASTM specifications E74. This is the same specification that the United States National Institute of Standards & Technology now uses for force calibrations. Force gauges, traction dynamometers, and other similar force measuring and weighing devices are calibrated at 10 points throughout their range. Unless requested otherwise, the standard 10 loads are applied in increments equal to 10 percent of the capacity of the device beginning at 10 percent of capacity. Additional loads may be calibrated as desired at an additional price per load, or any other 10 loads will be calibrated at no extra charge in lieu of the standard 10 loads.  If instruments are submitted with a specified tolerance, Morehouse will apply a guardband per Method 5 of ANSI/NCSLI Z540.3 Handbook and report Probability of False Accept (PFA) when making a statement of conformity.   This ensures compliance with section of ISO/IEC 17025:2017.  Special calibration procedures can be performed in accordance with special requests and requirements. 

These procedures may include:


·       Calibration of instruments requiring ASTM E74 Class AA loading range up to 120,000 lbf

·       ISO 376 calibration meeting class 00 up to 120,000 lbf and class 0.5 up to 2.25 million lbf

·       Ascending and descending calibrations

·       Multi-axis load cell calibrations

·       Multiple bridge load cell calibrations

·       Dual run calibration

·       Three run and average calibration

·       ASTM E74 limited load devices

·       Other force calibration procedures or special requests

A certificate of Calibration is issued for all instruments calibrated. The certificate not only shows tractability to SI units through the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), but also the uncertainty of the instrument. Load Cells, Proving Rings and other instruments that are calibrated per ASTM E74 specifications and meet its requirements are provided with a certificate accordingly.


In addition, a unique QR code is generated for every single force calibration. The QR code is printed on the calibration sticker which is normally placed on the instrument after calibration. Customers can easily access the calibration certificate by scanning the QR code on the calibration sticker using a smartphone or other scanning tools.
