Torque Calibration

Almost all torque measurements have unaccounted measurement errors. Torque load cell calibration is much more complex than simply accounting for force and length.  Other considerations include cross variable forces, angular alignment issues, parasitic forces, and bending moments from an unsupported arm—all of which are common sources of error found in almost every torque calibration setup.

Not considering error sources will result in inaccurate calibrations

Morehouse has considered these error sources. Our state-of-the-art deadweight torque measurement system is the second-most accurate torque machine in the world.  This machine, which was used in CIPM comparisons, is capable of performing calibrations up to 1475 lbf.ft (2000 N.m) with an accuracy of 0.0025 % of applied torque.

NIST does not offer torque calibration

NPL has commissioned this machine at our facility in York, PA, making Morehouse the home to the only national torque standard in North America.  Morehouse can certify torque equipment, produce results, and eliminate doubt. If you want to verify the accuracy of your torque measurements, Morehouse is ready to provide you with topnotch customer service and torque calibration solutions.

Why Torque is important

From the tightening of wheel nuts on an automobile to the assembly of caps for pill bottles, or maximizing the output of an internal combustion engine, the accurate measurement of torque is essential to North American Industry. Morehouse's torque laboratory can calibrate torque transfer devices.  Our goal is to disseminate the proper units of torque throughout industry. We provide the ability to accurately verify torque systems through an unbroken chain of traceability to an NMI (National Metrology Institute). This high-accuracy calibration comes with an exceptional, personalized customized customer service at Morehouse.

As the only primary torque laboratory in North America, Morehouse collaborated with North American Industry through the ASTM E28 committee to help ensure labs are making accurate torque measurements.   Unfortunately,  less than a dozen labs participated in the proficiency test and about 20 % of them did not pass.    If you are interested in having your devices calibrated to an accuracy level only achievable at a few NMI’s, and if you want reliable results, please contact us at 717-843-0081.

At Morehouse, every customer receives customized services which are suited for their requirements. Morehouse’s unique technical capabilities are only one of the reasons why our customers prefer our services. In addition, we realize that our customers expect to receive a higher level of service and quality than anywhere else. We partner with many of our customers to solve the issues they face with their operations.   We partner with Industry to ensure reliable results.  Morehouse torque calibration customers routinely receive:

·       Initial inspection of all instrument components to ensure reliable performance

·       Helping customers with troubleshooting and repairing defective or incomplete instruments which are sent in for calibration

·       Initial contract review, checking procedures to ensure a mutual understanding of the customer’s requirements

·       Supported by knowledgeable Engineering and Production teams to provide solution for special equipment or procedures

·       Exercising best torque calibration practices

·       Simulation of customers loading conditions in the field during calibration to ensure reliable results

·       Helping customers with uncertainty calculations, technical troubleshooting, and torque measurement best practices

·       Continuous communication with the customer during the order process to ensure quality service

·       Tailoring shipping and billing procedures for customer's needs

Morehouse torque lab can calibrate a variety of torque sensors such as torque load cells, static torque cells, rotary torque cells, reaction torque, etc..,  The laboratory is also supported by an engineering team, production team, and advanced machine shop capable of designing and making any adapters or fixtures necessary to perform the calibration correctly.

Morehouse torque laboratory is accredited for providing ISO/IEC 17025 certified calibrations for various procedures such as ASTM E2428 and BS7882 (British standard), as well as other procedures as defined by the customer. Our torque calibration facilities and procedures are documented in a controlled Quality Assurance program manual that provides for the requirements of the following:

·       ISO 17025 Accreditation by A2LA certificate # 1398.01

·       ISO Guide 25 (ISO/IEC 17025) – General requirements for the competence of calibration and testing laboratories.

·       ANSI/NCSL Z540-3 – American National Standard for Calibration – Calibration Laboratories and Measuring and Test Equipment General Requirements.

·       Morehouse is audited by a large NUPIC team for the following:

o   10 CFR 50 APPENDIX B – Quality Assurance Criteria for Nuclear Power Plants and Fuel Reprocessing Plants.

o   10 CFR PART 21 – United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission – Reporting of Defects and Noncompliance.

Quality and consistency of the calibration at Morehouse laboratories is monitored continuously through proficiency testing, statistical performance control, control charts, and risk analysis. Below is a recent PT demonstrating the Measurement Process at Morehouse is stable and expanded uncertainties of 0.003 % of applied torque or better is being achieved. For more information, please visit our Accreditation webpage.

Morehouse torque laboratory is capable of performing various standard calibrating procedures such as ASTM E2428 and BS7882 (British standard), as well as other procedures as specified by the customer. In addition, Morehouse engineering support enables the torque lab to calibrate a variety of torque sensors with different sizes and configurations, including multi-axis torque cells. If instruments are submitted with a specified tolerance, Morehouse will apply a guardband per Method 5 of ANSI/NCSLI Z540.3 Handbook and report Probability of False Accept (PFA) when making a statement of conformity.   This ensures compliance with section of ISO/IEC 17025:2017.  Special calibration procedures can be performed in accordance with special requests and requirements.

If no calibration procedure is specified by the customer, a single run calibration is performed at 8-10 different test points, normally applied in increments equal to 10-15 percent of the capacity of the device. Additional test points can be added as per customer’s request for an additional per point price. Some of our torque calibration procedures are:

·       Calibration of instruments as per ASTM E2428 in torque range up to 1475 lbf.ft (2000 N.m)

·       British Standard BS 7882

·       Clockwise and counter-clockwise calibrations

·       Multi-axis torque cell calibrations, we calibrate several force and torsion cells

·       Multiple bridge torque cell calibrations

·       Dual run calibration

·       Three run and average calibration

·       Other calibration procedures or special requests

For each torque calibration performed, a calibration certificate is generated and shipped with the instrument. Certificate includes many valuable pieces of information about the calibration and instrument performance including:

·       Standards used for the calibration

·       Traceability information to the SI units through the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) or United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

·       Calibration procedure

·       Calibration due date if required or specified by the customer

·       Expanded uncertainty of the calibration

·       Instrument serial number and other identification information

·       Calibration data

·       Special observations or notes for performing the calibration
